Shakespeare realized this and sought to bring the controversy that comes with Androgynous issuesto life. Through strong female characters and the implications of disguises, Shakespeare exposes gender issues. Many critics believe Shakespeare poorly represents women in his plays through intentional exploiting of women with his boy-girl-boy disguises. When in fact, I see Shakespeare as exploiting how women were/are treated through that very use of disguises and the strength he gives his female characters, especially that of Portia Merchant of Venice and Viola Twelfth nightis representative of his personal admiration of intelligent, strong women. It is also important to mention that the idea of a transsexual theme did not exist during Shakespeares time, as in the same sense that one would have now. Men playing the part of womenplaying the part of men was simply accepted by the audie nce. Shakespeare was able to use this acceptance as an opportunity to give female characters strong and important roles. Portia is so strong of a character, she would have been considered a devil woman in the eyes of her peershumor for the boy-girl-boy disguise for the audience of the time. Yet, Shakespeares portrayal of Portia and Viola, is heroic in todays terms. By the mid-eighteen hundreds, Shakespeares female characters were starting to be analyzed. Shakespeare was over two hundred years ahead of his time on gender issues. Although Shakespeare also used feminine men to illustrate the characteristics given to men were also confined to certain social critique, he focused more on the roles women played, or were not socially nor by way of law allowed to play, during his time. Through the will, strength, virtues, and intelligent mind of Portia to the will, sweetness and deep need for survival of Viola, Shakespeare embraces Androgyny and exposes his own feminine side for future generations to analyze and feminists to explore. Robert Kimbrough, in his 1982 essay: Androgyny Seen Through Shakespeares Disguise, provides several definitions of Androgyny. The definition most fitting to the contemporary time is, Androgyny is the capacity of a single person of either sex to embody the full range of human character traits, despite cultural attempts to render some exclusively feminine and some exclusively masculine 1. Some believe androgyny is a secular dream and unattainable, but through structural change of institutional and social organizationsit can be attained. How does Shakespeare then expose his audience to androgyny? What was his purpose for doing so? A partial answer could be that Shakespeare believed in total equality for men and women and through characters in his plays he could take on the forbidden taboos of gender crossing within his social society. Sex does not equal gender. Through Anthropology we know that every culture has their own Modal Cultural Personality definition, one for the male and one for the female. Modal Personality is static in nature and ascribes women and men certain roles. Women do womens work and men do mens work,à for example. This was necessary for primitive society to survive but stigmas of these role requirements linger still today. Women are still socially required to look pretty, wear make-up, smell nice, be virtuous, motherly, sisterly, feminine, show little to no masculine traits, and the all important nurturer. Shakespeare used Portia and Violas characters to liberate women from one certain set of characteristic traits by broadening their human characteristic traits through their male disguises. In a sense then, Portia and Viola are liberated from the confines of the appropriate 1. Portia and viola are both aware of the social posturing of men. Each is very careful to hide her true self. In The Merchant of Venice, Portia devises a scheme to protect her wealth, status and power she has become accustomed to love. She uses trickery to get what she wants in the end which is two gains; protection of her status, wealth and power and she ends up the heroine. Portia is careful not to reveal her intelligence to the men in the play until she has completed her tasks. An English woman during this time period would most likely not have acted the way Portia acted. Shakespeare transforms Portias character, from at first appearance, a spoiled rich womanto an intelligent, self reliant female. Social and historical context of the play EssayI prithee, and Ill pay thee bounteously, Conceal me what I am, and be my aid For such disguise as haply shall become The form of my intent. This allows Viola to discover herself on a deeper level. Kimbrough presents Violas self-discovery as more proof of androgyny. Speaking of a specific scene in Twelfth Night, he explains that true of heart as we, means human kind causingà the word we to become truly androgynous 1. Viola is able to shed any trace of gender, she is neither masculine nor feminine. The entire play does revolve around the theme that identity is confusing. Shakespeare uses Festes character to present the idea that identity can be confusing. Shakespeare was telling us that the very essence of identity is in our mind. Bonos dies, Sir Toby. For, as the old hermit of Prague, that never saw pen and ink, very wittily said To a niece of King Gorboduc, That that is, is; so I, Being master Parson, am Master Parson; for what is that but that, and is but is? With Festes lines, Shakespeare not only provides his audience with comedy but he metaphorically ponders the idea of identity and gender. Androgyny was defiantly a passion of Shakespeare, as we have seen. Through his use of disguises, Shakespeare was able to present his audiencesthen and nowwith important gender issues that were obviously way ahead of their time. He was a master of double meanings and creating atmospheres that he could drive points home from within. He created strong female characters to show female stigmas of his time. Shakespeare should be considered one of the founders of feminist views. He believed in equality among the sexes. His liberation of women through disguises gives us so much insight to the atmosphere of the times regarding gender and womens roles in society. Women are still fighting these same society imposed characteristics and the only solution is to get as close to androgyny as a society without giving up our own identities. We must eliminate gender bias and focus as one whole unitits what Shakespeare wanted. paigephillips704http://www.blogger.com/profile/10790413584702366934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-705127285108324389.post-77860204774320036142020-04-20T21:56:00.001-07:002020-04-20T21:56:03.243-07:00Life After Death - Robert Frost And Emily Dickinson Essays Life After Death - Robert Frost And Emily Dickinson Life After Death Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson are two Modern American Poets who consistently wrote about the theme of death. While there are some comparisons between the two poets, when it comes to death as a theme, their writing styles were quite different. Robert Frost's poem, ?Home Burial,? and Emily Dickinson's poems, ?I felt a Funeral in my Brain,? and ?I died for Beauty,? are three poems concerning death. While the theme is constant there are differences as well as similarities between the poets and their poems. The obvious comparison between the three poems is the theme of death. Both poets, in these works and many others, display a fascination with the death of themselves as well as the death of peers, and loved ones. Both Frost and Dickinson experienced a great deal of death throughout each of their lives. Frost's greatest loss was the death of his son, which is greatly depicted in his poem ?Home Burial.? Dickinson suffered the loss of many friends and family. She spent a lot of her time in her room looking out upon the headstones of these people. The only strong comparison between the poets, in terms of structure and technique, is that the meaning of their poems run much deeper then the specific words on a page. Even this can come as a contrast when looking at these three poems. ?Home Burial,? by Frost is a fairly straightforward poem, written in dialogue, with the writer working as the narrator. The poem is about a married couple dealing with the recent death of their son, who the husband had to bury in their own backyard. It is a considerably long poem, which doesn't require one to read between the lines. Where as ?I felt a Funeral in my Brain,? and ?I died for Beauty,? by Dickinson are considerably short poems, in which she seals as much as she reveals. Emily Dickinson's poetry was not that of any traditional style. She was criticized for capitalizing words in the middle of sentences, using inexact rhymes and only giving a partial understanding. She loved to use ellipses, in order to let the reader finish a thought. Many of these were actually eliminated in many of her first publications, which were never published until after her death. In the two poems, ?I felt a Funeral in my Brain,? and ?I died for Beauty? all of these characteristics are present, including her usual four line stanzas in the meter of traditional hymns. Written in first person, ?I felt a Funeral in my Brain? is about the thought of her own funeral. Imagining what is would be like in the coffin, where only the sense of sound is present. The last word of the poem is then-?, a classic example of an ellipse, where the reader is left to finish the poem on their own. ?I died for Beauty also ends with an ellipse. The poem is about two dead people, herself and another ma n, resting side by side, buried underground. Like ?Home Burial,? by Frost, this was written in dialogue with the writer as the narrator. One died for Beauty and one for truth. Although it seemed as though they died for an important cause, with time their names will be forgotten. Unlike Dickinson, Robert Frost wrote in a traditional style. ?Home Burial,? like many of his poems, was written in iambic pentameter, giving five beats per line. Using iambic pentameter gives the poem a monotone, rhythmic feel. Because the poem reads very rhythmically, the seriousness of the poem is exaggerated. This dramatically differs from the two poems by Dickinson. Emily Dickinson's poems, though just as serious, come across quite a bit lighter then ?Home Burial.? The structure of her poems gives a riddle-like effect. The difference in length between the poems changes the mood as well. In Frost's poem the thought of death is drawn out simply by the length of the poem, where as the abruptness of Dickinson's poems give a much lighter feel. Another difference between Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson's poems is the perspective taken by the poet. In ?Home Burial? there is mourning over the loss of a son. paigephillips704http://www.blogger.com/profile/10790413584702366934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-705127285108324389.post-83175957278202277792020-03-15T21:45:00.001-07:002020-03-15T21:45:03.357-07:00Sexism is Manifest in Magazines EssaysSexism is Manifest in Magazines Essays Sexism is Manifest in Magazines Essay Sexism is Manifest in Magazines Essay Everyday, we face advertisements that use the sexuality of individuals to sell products.à Advertising degrades a womanââ¬â¢s worth in society and uses her body to sell items such as cars, jewelry, and beverages.à Those most often exploited are our mothers, daughters, and sisters. Beautiful women, scantily dressed give us incentive to buy products, whenever the incentive is to be with these females, or as in most cases, to be like them.à Because of this is exploitation, women believe they have to live up to an unachievable standard of beauty.à If they fail to reach these ideas, they are made to feel worthless. The ideal woman is based on flawlessness: no lines, wrinkles, blemishes, and scars-no pores.à She is human.à This look can only be achieved cosmetically, and is the only standard of beauty in our culture (Kilbourne). ââ¬Å"Deep in many girls hearts lies an impossible standard-long blonde hair, long, long legs, a slim, tall body, and p erpetual youth.à Call it Barbieâ⬠(Winegar 1 E).à Dr. Lesley J. Dlugokinski, a clinical psychologist from Oklahoma City, suggests that many of the messages linking a womanââ¬â¢s value to her beauty are deeply rooted in Western Culture, beginning with ancient myths and fairtales like ââ¬Å"Sleeping Beautyâ⬠(qtd. in Kinka). So much emphasis placed on appearance that a womanââ¬â¢s lovability and desirability rely on it.à An advertisement for a weight loss clinic reads: ââ¬Å" Iââ¬â¢d probably never be married now if I hadnââ¬â¢t lost forty-nine poundsââ¬â¢-which one woman said was the best advertisement for fat sheââ¬â¢d ever seenâ⬠.à Such advertisements only reaffirm that being beautiful is a result of the products we buy, not who we are inside.à Physical appearance seems to define a womanââ¬â¢s worth. In most advertisements, the womanââ¬â¢s body is used as an object, and whatever her body is like, it will not do; it must change.à Every part of the body must be altered.à For many women in America, how they look often determines how they feel about themselves, impacting their self-esteem.à ââ¬Å"The message regardingâ⬠¦physical beauty is so pervasive that even women with wonderful talents, attributes, skills and intellect donââ¬â¢t feel those are enoughâ⬠(Winegarà 1-E).à Women are judged solely on appearance and are put into competition with each otherââ¬â¢s looks; if a woman does achieve the desire look, she loses love of other women.ââ¬Å"The essential selling traits used in the portrayal of women are alluring, decorative, and traditionalâ⬠(Courtney 9).à The trend of using women for allurement or decoration is found mostly in advertisements for beverages and automobiles.à The sexual implications are more than obvious in selling a product that has nothing to do with sex.à These types of advertisements are found throughout mainly menââ¬â¢s magazines, selling ââ¬Å"manlyâ⬠products.Advertisers subliminally integrate sexual ideas into the selling of products.à They realize that many times that people do not read the copy, so they use photographs to exploit sexuality in males and females in the shape of the products or the way the models are positioned.à An advertisement for Loveââ¬â¢s Baby Soft perfume reads: ââ¬Å"Because innocence is sexier than you thinkâ⬠.à In the advertisement, an adult woman is presented as a child.à She is dressed as a little girl, but she is sitting with her legs apart, skirt slightly raised.à She has a visible cleavage and is sucking in a lollipop.à The shape of the perfume bottle is clearly phallic, and the implicit meanings in the advertisement tell women not to be mature or grown up and to stay passive, powerless, and dependent (Kilnourne). On the other hand, some advertisements, even try to cover the fact that they are bluntly using sexuality to sell their products.à In some advertisements, women are naked, wearing only the product for sale. The use of their bodies to sell these products, which have nothing to do with being naked, is disgusting.à Their sexuality is only being used to catch the eye of the consumer.Feminine things are constantly devalued, which causes women to devalue themselves and men to devalue women.à Women are being devalued each time an advertisement depicts a woman as an object.à ââ¬Å"Turning a human being into an object is the first step in justifying violence toward that personâ⬠(Kilbourne). à Men are portrayed as violent and brutal in advertisements, and their body language sends a message to tell all men to be in control, and always uses power, threat, and intimidation.à A billboard for a Rolling Stones album cover reads, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m black and blue from the Rolling Stones, and I Love Itâ⬠(Kilbourne).à Such advertisements give the implication that women love and deserve to be beaten.à An even more appalling advertisement for menââ¬â¢s boots headlines, ââ¬Å"Treatââ¬â¢em good and theyââ¬â¢ll treat you goodâ⬠(Kilbourne).à It shows a woman straddling a manââ¬â¢s leg, pulling his boot off.à The copy read, ââ¬Å"Some men treat their boots better than their women; not all together admirable, but certainly understandableâ⬠(Kilbourne).à Battery of women is presented as a joke.à People who are opposed to violent and sexist advertisement must organize to remove them, and the products they sell from our lives.Four general stereotypes of women are; ââ¬Å"a womanââ¬â¢s place is in the home; women do not make important decisions or do important things; women are dependent and need a manââ¬â¢s protection; and men regard women primarily as sex objectsâ⬠(Courtney 7).à Even though in 1987, one third of all women in the labour force were the sole supporter of their families, advertisements like the following for Braemar sweaters ma de a joke of a woman in the work place.à The advertisement shows a woman in a skirt, blouse and a Braemar sweater.à The copy reads, ââ¬Å"Phoebe chose to work, not because she had to, but because it gave her a place to wear her Braemar sweatersâ⬠(Kilbourne).à Such sacrum of women in the work place only destroys what has taken so long to get even to this level.à The womenââ¬â¢s movement is constantly being mocked and patronized in advertisements. The most prevalent problem in advertisingââ¬â¢s ideal ofà women is weight.à After seeing hundreds of advertisements featuring ultra-thin, waif-like models each day, women feel contempt, loathing, and disgust for their bodies.à Joan Dickerson, author of Some Thoughts onà Fat, claimsà that ââ¬Å"weââ¬â¢re all supposed to strive for a long and thin ideal, but who exemplifies this ideal?à A man, of course; specifically a young manâ⬠à (Winegar 1-E).à Young women especially, are judging them selves based on what they see in the mirror.à One in five college-age women have eating disorders, and eighty to eighty-five percent of the consumers of diet programs are women.à The idea for women as displayed in advertisements weights twenty-five percent less than average woman (Winegar 1-E ).Since more and more womenââ¬â¢s groups protest their exploitation in advertising, a small trend toward lessening these advertisements is coming about.à However, because of this, men are being exploited instead.à An example is a television commercial for Diet Coke in which female office workers ââ¬Å"gawkâ⬠out the window at a shirtless male construction worker.à Because it is not politically correct to use women as objectââ¬â¢s now, ââ¬Å"men are the babiesâ⬠¦itââ¬â¢s pleasing to the eye to show menââ¬â¢s pecs, since you canââ¬â¢t show womenââ¬â¢s breastâ⬠(Dunn B-6).à Although this does seem to be a trend, it will take time before men reach the level of exploitation that women have faced for decades. After seeing thousands of exploitive advertisements every year, we become callus to the psychological effects they have on us as consumers.à No oneââ¬â¢s body, male or female, deserves to be treated as an object, but should be held in high esteem and respect.à This respect should not be limited to those who are thin or beautiful or white or heterosexual.à Advertising that depicts this standard pollutes our minds and only we as consumers, by standing up against such unrealistic ideals, can stop the pollution. paigephillips704http://www.blogger.com/profile/10790413584702366934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-705127285108324389.post-85960025577916321782020-02-28T12:11:00.001-08:002020-02-28T12:11:02.483-08:00Collective Bargaining Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 wordsCollective Bargaining - Essay Example The unionization law, therefore, differs in various economic systems. The unionization is not allowed directly but it is a method that is developed in order to exercise collective bargaining and in its objective forming unions is a legal act (Katz, 1993). The formation of a union is only acceptable in private sector but it is treated as a capital crime in governmental offices and armed forces. In case of armed forces, the culprits of unionization are thrown into jail and upon completion of their sentence, they are court-martialed. The formation of a union is the last thing a soldier will think about before leaving his or her job. Additionally, armed forces argue that they are operating for saving their nationsââ¬â¢ sovereignty and pride and therefore, they should not indulge in providing ideal work environment for the soldiers while they have to live in tough environment during the war so they must be trained in terms of making the most of even the worst kind of work climate. The practices of collective bargaining and unionization are known to emerge at the end of the great depression when people were forced to work in the extremities of inhumane environments. With the passage of time, the workers started to raise voices about their work environment and finally, legal courts initiated to respond to their needs and companies had to offer their employees a safe and sound environment to work in. the stream of change in this regard because the beacon of moment shifted towards improving the quality of supervisory behaviors as time passed. The legal pressures caused the companies to adopt modern philosophies of management such as delegation of authority and participative management. The Japanese taught the world that bureaucracy is an inefficient way of managing the organizations because it wastes too much time in decision making and they presented the concept of self-managed teams which scanned the environment so that they can develop strategies in order to cope with the current challenges of the business. paigephillips704http://www.blogger.com/profile/10790413584702366934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-705127285108324389.post-47227497678203249062020-02-12T04:58:00.001-08:002020-02-12T04:58:02.086-08:00Journal Entry #1 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 wordsJournal Entry #1 - Essay Example This being said, there is one aspect of culture that is particularly contentious even in our multicultural setting, and that is religion. This should not be surprising, since even within a single culture the topic of religion is a sensitive one. There was a time when the American forefathers did not find any unusual issue with the phrase ââ¬Å"In God We Trustâ⬠so as to embellish it in the nationââ¬â¢s currency. Recently, however, even the invocation of God in inter-denominational prayer and the singing of Christmas carols in public places have come under attack ââ¬â because it seems that the disbelief in God itself has become a religion to be respected. Religion is so ingrained in the very core of peopleââ¬â¢s beliefs and aspirations that an attack upon it is taken as an affront against the Supreme Being (or non-being, in the case of atheists) that demands defense and, at times, militant vindication. The workplace is a particularly delicate place to have problems of religious intolerance. This is because we most likely spend more time at work than at home ââ¬â at least the greater part of our waking hours. Work demands of us our skills, concentration, creativity, and dedication to the organizationââ¬â¢s goal, which is why any irritant to disturb the peace in the workplace will tend to be counterproductive for both the individual and the firm. The situation becomes complicated when individuals in the workplace would be followers of mainstream or radical religious teachings which draw an opposition to other religions, the followers of which may be their co-workers in the firm. Or, it may also be that actions that appear perfunctory to some may, without their knowledge, be offensive to others or denigrate what they conceive to be sacred and holy. Furthermore, the fact that religious teachings have been imparted by the family to the individual at a tender age may have also impressed upon him the paigephillips704http://www.blogger.com/profile/10790413584702366934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-705127285108324389.post-57200996451038211832020-01-31T16:49:00.001-08:002020-01-31T16:49:02.761-08:00You are going to write an annotated bibliography of the research youYou are going to write an of the research you have done for your research paper - Annotated Bibliography Example This time Russiaââ¬â¢s next move will affect the interests of the EU and may provoke unrest in Europe. Throughout the story Bone has to live a life where she thinks that she is the leading mystery of the trouble being caused. She has numerous unhappy situations and is in no way self-satisfied with herself. She doesnââ¬â¢t appreciate who she is physically. She constantly thinks she is the most homely and dull person who causes the most inconvenience in the family. This sense of selflessness is mainly due to the physical and sexual abuse brought upon by Daddy Glen, Boneââ¬â¢s stepfather. Unfortunately, the assaults were stretched out over a long period of time, leaving little chance for Bone to recover as an adult if any at all. I decided to take a more scientific approach to discussing Boneââ¬â¢s future as an adult. The most common disorders I feel Bone is likely to face are posttraumatic stress, cognitive distortions, emotional pain, and avoidance, an impaired sense of sel f and interpersonal difficulties. After finishing some research I concluded that Bone would most likely be diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder. It entails enduring certain psychological symptoms that occur in reaction to a highly distressing, psychically disruptive event. A diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) requires the occurrence of a traumatic event, as well as frequent experiencing of the event through nightmares or intrusive thoughts, a numbing of general responsiveness to, or avoidance of, current events, and persistent symptoms of increased arousal, such as jumpiness, sleep disturbance, or poor concentration. All of these occurrences are a result from the sexual abuse Bone was forced to tolerate from Glen. Triggers of flashbacks include sexual stimuli or interactions, abusive behavior by other adults, disclosure of one's abuse experiences to others, and reading or seeing sexual or violent media depictions, all of which would more than likely be experienced throughout Boneââ¬â¢s adult life. Unfortunately all of these experiences are apart of life and in most cases canââ¬â¢t be avoided. Bone is obviously going to be exposed to such things, which could induce flashbacks. Without question Bone would suffer from cognitive distortions. As a result from the traumatic events throughout her life with Glen her assumptions and self-perceptions typically reflect an overestimation of the a... ...ren attempt suicide each year because they canââ¬Ët bear being abused any longer. Fortunately, Bone hasnââ¬â¢t reached that point yet. Depending on the circumstances ahead in the future, I see suicide as a last resort. à à à à à It is important to appreciate that these issues are very complex, and to be familiar with how abuse and neglect can affect various aspects of a person's life. Child abuse does not affect every person the same. The extremity of the abuse and different situations determine the effect. Some people could live on to become great people and do great things. They donââ¬â¢t look at the abuse as something negative but rather as something that made them strong and made them believe that they were better and could do better than the situation that they were in. Dealing with abuse after it is over is the toughest thing to handle, most people that could afford therapy go to it, but since most people canââ¬Ët afford it they try to deal with it the best they can. Although in most cases the child is removed from the home that the abuse is happening in, sometimes child abuse can slip by unnoticed and that can have severe consequences on the child as well as others. paigephillips704http://www.blogger.com/profile/10790413584702366934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-705127285108324389.post-77852383094642191772020-01-15T09:37:00.001-08:002020-01-15T09:37:05.784-08:00As She Grows – Creative Writingââ¬Å"And it's another thing to have that one person not love you back, not the way you want them to. â⬠(Cowan 106). As She Grows by Lesley Anne Cowan tells us the story of a teenaged girl, Snow, who grew up with no mother or father. The person that acted as her ââ¬Å"parentâ⬠was her grandmother, a drunkard. Growing up with no love at home, she leaves for a group home. It is there she makes her life changing decision. To keep her child and to give her a home showered with love and happiness. Throughout this book, the author shows Snow's journey, separation when she leaves her grandmother, initiation when she gets pregnant and decides to keep the child, and return, when she decides to return to her former life in order to raise Betty. In As She Grows, Snow struggles to show her daughter the love that she had never experienced, so that her child might have the life she never had, filled with love and care, demonstrating the power of love to transform lives. The most significant reason for this was the lack of family love for Snow. Snow grows up with her grandmother, an alcoholic. Her mother drowned and her father is unknown. She grows up used to feeling needed by her grandmother, but she is tired of following her grandmother's crazy antics. She finally decides to leave her grandmother and moves into a group home. ââ¬Å"I wait to feel something, anything other than this blankness inside. â⬠(Cowan 277). Snow leaves her grandmother, hoping for a better future, away from her grandmother. When she first arrives at the group home, she finds some bad in each person, giving her a reason for her to hate them at first sight. Yet soon, she discovers that she was wrong and finds qualities in them for her to appreciate. Her ââ¬Å"parentsâ⬠are now composed of a group of people called ââ¬Å"Staffâ⬠. The way Staff acts like a parental figure makes Snow feel a deficiency of love, even away from her grandmother. ââ¬Å"At some point, I saw them differently and I actually wanted to belong. â⬠(Cowan 207). Even though she did not like the group home or the people living there at first, she learns that they were good friends to her when she needed them to be there for her. Another reason for her change is that Snow slowly learns to put trust in her friends. When Snow finds out that she is pregnant, she tries to accept the truth by herself. Yet, she soon finds out that this is too much for her to carry by herself, so she tells this secret to one person. Each person living in a group home is assigned to a counselor. To Snow, going to a counselor is her price to stay in a group home. Her counselor, Eric, slowly persuades her to tell him about her reasons of leaving her grandmother. Soon, she breaks down and tells him why she left and even about her pregnancy. ââ¬Å"Some words spill out of me and other are forced through my throat. â⬠(Cowan 178). At thins point, Snow tells Eric that she is tired, that she does not want to plan her next step in life. She tells him, ââ¬Å"I have no fight left in me. â⬠(Cowan 179). After her friend Jasmyn's persuasion, she tells the group home and Staff that she is pregnant. Soon, Snow learns that sometimes outsiders that are not related to you in any way can become the closest people in the world, the ones you can rely on most. To Snow, going to this group home was her life-changing decision that altered her future for the better. The final reason for this change is to show the maternal love she never received in her childhood to her baby daughter, Betty. Snow struggles to understand the meaning of maternal love. In the very last line of the book, ââ¬Å"If I rise in you, bury me. â⬠(Cowan 289). She tells her daughter that if Snow's life is going to be seen in Betty, she must somehow break away from it. A couple weeks after Betty's birth, she tells her daughter, ââ¬Å"People are afraid I won't know how to love you. (Cowan 225). Snow believes that she will find that courage and bravery in her that is needed to take care of her. Snow is a perfect portrayal of a victim of a society. Society thinks that all teenaged mothers will not know how to love their children. ââ¬Å"Moments when I think, I can actually do this. â⬠(Cowan 126). Snow sometimes has doubts about her ability to raise her daughter, but she also has times where she knows that she can raise her daughter, and not allow her to relive her own life's journey. Yet Snow is not so confident for the majority of the time. ââ¬Å"Look away from her piercing eyes and whisper, ââ¬ËI'm sorry', into her soft skin. â⬠(Cowan 277). Snow worries that her daughter's present and future. In the present, Snow is afraid she will not know how and when to love her. In the future, Snow is afraid about what life her daughter will choose to take. She wants the best life possible for Betty, and Snow thinks the life she had was the worst life imaginable, a kind of life she doesn't want Betty to have. In the last two lines of As She Grows, ââ¬Å"If I rise, bury me. If I rise in you, bury me. â⬠(Cowan 289). Snow's difficulties in raising Betty are shown. Her lack of parental love in her childhood has caused Snow to learn maternal love for her child, because she does not want Betty following in her old steps. Even near death, Snow still wants the best for her daughter. She loves her and says that if her bad characteristics or her life ever appear to surface in Betty's life, she is to bury all of this. paigephillips704http://www.blogger.com/profile/10790413584702366934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-705127285108324389.post-13251185751079381432020-01-07T06:00:00.001-08:002020-01-07T06:00:03.979-08:00What Is Manorialism In medieval Europe, the economic system of manorialism was often practiced as a way in which landowners could legally increase their profits, while taking advantage of a peasant workforce. This system, which granted primary legal and economic power to a lord of the manor, is rooted in ancient Roman villas, and it persisted for several hundred years. Did You Know? Early medieval manors were the hub of social, political, and legal activity. The lord of the manor had the final say in all matters, and his serfs or villeins were contractually obligated to provide goods and services. The manorial system eventually died out as Europe moved into a money-based economy. Manorialism Definition and Origins In Anglo-Saxon Britain, manorialism was a rural economic system that allowed landowners to become powerful, both politically and socially. The system of manorialism can trace its roots back to the period in which England was occupied by Rome. During the late Roman period, which was the heyday of the villa, large landowners were forced to consolidate their landââ¬âand their laborersââ¬âfor purposes of protection. Workers got plots of land to cultivate, and the protection of the landowner and his men at arms. The landowner himself benefited from the economic contribution of the workers. Over time, this evolved into an economic system known asà feudalism, which thrived from around the late eighth century into the 1400s. During the latter part of the feudal system, many rural economies were gradually replaced with the manor economy. In manorialism, sometimes called the seignorial system, peasants were completely under the jurisdiction of the lord of their manor. They were obligated to him economically, politically, and socially. The manor itself, a landed estate, was the center of the economy, and this allowed for the efficient organization of property for the landed aristocracy, as well as clergy. Biblioteca Monasterio del Escorial, Madrid, Spain / Getty Images Manorialism was found, under various names, in most parts of Western Europe, including France, Germany, and Spain. It took hold in England, and also as far east as the Byzantine Empire, parts of Russia, and Japan. Manorialism vs. Feudalism While the feudal system existed in a way that overlapped manorialism for many years in much of Europe, they are economic structures that affect two different relationships. Feudalism relates to the political and military relationship a king might have with his nobles; the aristocracy existed to protect the king as needed, and the king in turn rewarded his supporters with land and privilege. Manorialism, on the other hand, is the system by which those aristocratic landowners related to the peasants on their holdings. The manor was an economic and judicial social unit, in which the lord, the manor court, and a number of communal systems coexisted together, benefiting everyone to some degree. Both feudalism and manorialism were structured around social class and wealth, and were used by the upper class to control the possession of land, which was the root of the economy. Over time, as agrarian changes took place, Europe shifted to a money-based market, and the manor system eventually declined and ended. Organization of the Manorial System A European manor was typically organized with a large house at the center. This was where the lord of the manor and his family lived, and also the location for legal trials held in the manor court; this typically took place in the Great Hall. Often, as the manor and the landowners holdings grew, apartments were built on to the home, so that other nobles could come and go with minimal fuss. Because the lord might own several manors, he could be absent from some of them for months at a time; in that case, he would appoint a steward or seneschal to oversee daily operations of the manor. Vintage colour engraving of the Culture of the Vine, France, 16th Century. Duncan1890 / Getty Imagesà Because the manor house was also the center of military strength, although it might not have been as fortified as a castle, it would often be enclosed within walls to protect the main house, the farm buildings, and the livestock. The main house was surrounded by a village, small tenant houses, strips of land for farming, and common areas that were used by the entire community. The typical European manor consisted of three different types of land arrangements. The demesne land was used by the lord and his tenants for common purposes; roads, for instance, or communal fields would be demesne land. Dependent lands were worked by tenants, known as serfs or villeins, in a subsistence farming system specifically for the economic benefit of the lord. Often these tenancies were hereditary, so several generations of a single family could live on and work the same fields for decades. In return, the serf family was legally obligated to supply the lord with agreed-upon goods or services. Finally, free peasant land was less common, but still found in some smaller holdings; this was land cultivated and rented by peasants who were free, unlike their serf neighbors, but still fell under the jurisdiction of the manor house. Serfs and villeins were generally not free, but they were also not slaves. They and their families were contractually obligated to the lord of the manor. According to Encyclopedia Brittanica, the villein: ...could not without leave quit the manor and could be reclaimed by process of law if he did. The strictà contentionà of law deprived him of all right to hold property, and in many cases he was subject to certain degrading incidents... [he] paid for his holding in money, in labour, and in agrarian produce.à Manor Courts From legal standpoint, the manor court was at the center of the justice system, and handled cases both civil and criminal. Minor offenses such as theft, assault, and other petty accusations were handled as disputes between tenants. Offenses against the manor were considered more serious, because they disrupted the social order. A serf or villein who was accused of things like poaching or taking timber from the lords forests without permission might be treated more severely. Large-scale criminal offenses were remanded over to the king or his representative in a larger court. A view over a crofters home in Cumbria. Joe Cornish / Getty Images When it came to civil cases, nearly all manor court activity was related to the land. Contracts, tenancy, dowries, and other legal disputes were the predominant business of the manor court. In many cases, the lord himself was not the person passing judgment; often the steward or seneschal took on these duties, or a jury of twelve elected men would reach a decision together. The End of Manorialism As Europe began to shift towards a more commerce-based market, rather than one that relied on the land as capital, the manorial system started to decline. Peasants could earn money for their goods and services, and the expanding urban population created a demand for produce and timber in the cities. Subsequently, people became more mobile, often relocated to where the work was, and were able to buy their freedom from the lord of the manor. Lords eventually found that it was to their advantage to allow free tenants to rent land and pay for the privilege; these tenants were far more productive and profitable than those who held property as serfs. By the 17th century, most areas that had previously relied on the manorial system had instead switched over to a money-based economy. Sources Bloom, Robert L. et al. Resisting the Heteronormative Timeline: Japanese Womens Media and Sexuality as Subcultural Capital This seminar took place in the Hall center and it was generally about the gay boom in Japan. The speaker Sho Ogawa talked about the 1991 Gay Renaissanceâ⬠issue of a popular Japanese womenââ¬â¢s magazine ââ¬Å"Creaâ⬠which brought about a great rise in the representation of gay men in the japanese media phenomenon which is known as the ââ¬Å"gay boom.â⬠This boom affected how the Japanese media, in an amazing rush of films, nonfiction and fiction books, manga (Japanese comics), and television programs spreads information about gay maleââ¬â¢s way of life and sexuality to hetrosexual consumers. He also talked about how the earlier media boom conflatedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He then further explained how the gay boom brought a change not only in the exposure of the gay subculture or a shift from feminized images of homosexuality to masculine ones, but a change in the target audience for gay images. Also, he told us that there were actually gay male images that were produced for non-gay audiences prior to the gay boom in adolescent female teen culture (which is called the shojo culture) represented in teen magazines such as Olive or magazines such as June showing romantic relationships between adolescent boys. After about 30mins into the seminar, he talked about a movie Summer Vacation 1999 which was produced before the gay boom and it shows homosexual characters. However, unlike the films produced during the gay boom, the gay characters do not date or get married to homosexual women. Summer Vacation is an adaptation of the boys love manga ââ¬Å"The Heart of Thomasâ⬠with young female actors acting as adolescent schoolboys who were romantically drawn to each other. In addition, he went ahead to show us a video clip from the movie and I noticed that the females playing the gay male characters were dressed like westerners and the movi e setting was western. This was because at that time in Japan, homosexuality was seen to have originated from the west and therefore was western. Due to this, homosexual men in Japan were seen as almost western since homosexuality was not present in paigephillips704http://www.blogger.com/profile/10790413584702366934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-705127285108324389.post-85897822293206486682019-12-21T22:12:00.001-08:002019-12-21T22:12:02.382-08:00The Issue Of Gun Control - 1418 Words Jon Reichfield Mr. Thidemann U.S. Government 12R 6 October 2014 Gun control has been a controversial issue in America for over a half-century. This issue has two sides. On one side, there are people who oppose gun control and believe that it is their right under the second amendment to own one or more assault weapons. Republicans such as Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, Governor Rick Perry of Texas and Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina are against gun control. On the other side of the issue, there are people who favor gun control and believe that background checks should be given in order to keep these weapons out of the hands of people who are mentally ill. Democratic politicians such as House Majority Leader and Senator Harry Reid ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This law also required a person to register for a gun (Kim). Over the next thirty four years though, this issue worsened and more deaths occurred as a result of guns. These deaths included President John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. As a result of these assass inations, The Gun Control Act of 1968 was passed and later signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This act did not allow the sale of guns to drug users and the mentally ill, and it also required firearm dealers to get licenses and initiated interstate sale restrictions. The law also increased the age required in order to purchase a handgun to 21 (Kim). Not everybody was happy with this legislation though. The National Rifle Association, known as the NRA, founded in 1871, is a pro-gun organization that was unhappy with this act and with others. Once the Gun Control Act of 1968 was passed, the NRA opposed it. This caused the gun lobby to establish a new lobbying branch known as the NRA Institute for Legislative Action. The goal of this branch was to invalidate the 1968 law. In 1986, congress passed the Firearm Ownerââ¬â¢s Protection Act which was later signed by President Ronald Reagan. This law limited the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms from inspecting gun dealers more th an once a year, with other inspections allowed only if multiple violations are found. An amendment also passed banning ownership of machine guns manufactured after May 19, 1986. We often witness market decisions which neglect other important aspects of the market activity. As a result, we appear under the impact of one-side unbalanced decisions which ultimately neglect the principles of morality and moral theology of the marketplace. We will write a custom essay sample on New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority or any similar topic only for you Order Now Rising fares and tolls by MTA ââ¬Å"After an unusually vigorous and spirited debate, the board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority voted to raise fares on subways, buses and commuter railroads and tolls on bridges and tunnelsâ⬠(Chan, 2007a). Why is it so surprising that not all members of the MTA board wanted to turn into the proponents of fares and tollsââ¬â¢ increase? Does this mean that more and more political and business players realize the importance of morality in taking market decisions? Evidently, the situation is much worse than one may imagine. One may initially think that increasing the fares will lead to less traffic congestion, and will urge more people to use public transport; yet, the public transport fares are being raised, too. From the viewpoint of those who vote for raising fares and tolls in New York, this decision is the first step towards ââ¬Å"fiscal responsibility. The authority had for long applied windfalls and real estate taxes hoping that someone would bail us out and turning a blind eye to our responsibility to put this MTA on a firm future monetary structureâ⬠(Chan, 2007a). Simultaneously, from the viewpoint of morality and theology of the marketplace, commercial activity is not limited by rational market decisions, but also ââ¬Å"confronts us with the moral predicamentsâ⬠(Gregg, 2004). The major concern within this situation is that the decision to raise fares has completely neglected the position of those whom we traditionally consider to be vulnerable populations. The representative of Working Families Party is confident that raising fares will seriously hit working people (Benjamin, 2007). ââ¬Å"Today, once again middle class New Yorkers and those struggling to make it, are bearing the costâ⬠, Rep. Anthony Weiner said (Benjamin, 2007). ââ¬Å"A fare hike now is the wrong choice for New York. It would hit many people who are struggling hard to make ends meet and hurt the regionââ¬â¢s economy. [â⬠¦] This fare hike will hit 86 percent of the riding public who use fare discounts. These include pay-per-ride bonus MetroCards and 7- and 30-day unlimited-ride passes. Itââ¬â¢s also a double whammy for most L.I.R.R. and Metro-North commuters whose railroad fares would go up!â⬠(Chan, 2007b) The discussed fare hike will also cause the bonusesââ¬â¢ decrease for riders (from 20 to 15 percent), and the discounted fare will cost $1.74 instead of $1.67 (Chan, 2007b). The problem is that New Yorkers pay more than they have to for the transport they use. ââ¬Å"In 2005, riders paid 55 percent of the costs of running the subways and busesâ⬠(Chan, 2007b). Objectively, this is much higher that the riders in other cities pay: those in Boston do not compensate more than 29 percent of the discussed costs, and those in Philadelphia pay no more than 37 percent (Chan, 2007b). As the M.T.A reports $140 million reductions, does this mean that they will make the riders pay this amount through higher fares and tolls? Doubtlessly, the suggested fares and tolls increase will help compensate the under-financing of the MTA by the state Government, but if the decision framework remains unchanged, this compensation will actually take place for the account of the already mentioned vulnerable populations. ââ¬Å"To rely upon utilitarianism as the moral ââ¬â philosophical foundation of the case for the market creates tremendous difficulties for Catholicsâ⬠(Gregg, 2004). The utilitarian desire to find the greatest good and to satisfy the masses does not meet the ethical and moral criteria of religion. Those who were taking the decision to raise the fares and tolls in New York have neglected one essential aspect in their decision making: when one looks for the means to produce the greatest pleasure for the greatest number of people, one has to perform numerous calculations and to produce the decision which satisfies everyone. From the viewpoint of moral theology, such calculations in market decision-making are simply impossible. ââ¬Å"No person can make such an assessment without admitting a tremendous degree of ignorance about all the possible effects that might proceed from a freely chosen actâ⬠(Gregg, 2004). The MTA governors have evidently gone beyond their reasonable abilities, trying to persuade us that that the future with raised fares and tolls for everyone was better than other possible alternatives. The MTA board members view the increased tolls and fares as the means to close the gaps in MTAââ¬â¢s budget and to provide safe and reliable system of transportation for the New Yorkââ¬â¢s citizens. However, it is not the ultimate goal for those who use public transport and belong to vulnerable layers of the city population. Conclusion The moral theology of marketplace rejects any uniform measures in defining the goals of decision making. This is why the governors should have considered the financial opportunities of those who cannot afford paying more for using public transport. The diversified structure of prices would resolve all moral and ethical issues, and would not create serious obstacles on the way towards better functioning of the cityââ¬â¢s transportation systems. Essay Example For Students Oh, for a muse of ice! Essay Oscar Wildes famous pronouncement that life imitates art far more than art imitates life was never better exemplified than last month when details of the Nancy Kerrigan assault case began to be known. Initial reports of the attack by a masked man with a club impressed listeners as merely another instance of the endemic violence of American life. As arrests were made, however, a tidy melodrama emerged: glamor and rivalry in ice skating circles, deluded misfit plotters, potential corporate sponsors waiting in the wings. The nation followed the unfolding revelations with a rapture usually reserved for the Superbowl in progress. From the moment the police shifted their attention to Portland, Ore., fief of Kerrigans principal competitor, Tonya Harding, the attack in Detroit took on the familiar aspect of sordid intrigue. Journalists and the public latched on to it like soap opera addicts. Many said it was fact triumphing over fiction, or worthy of the movies. Which leads one to wonder: If the Kerrigan case were a play, what would it have to offer? A Manichaean world view in which nice figure skaters wear Plae sequins and mean ones wear dark, in which supporting roles are shamelessly type-cast. Then theres the dialogue. Tonya Harding commenting on the attack: Nobody wanted to beat her worse than me. Add to this the hare-brained story of how the plot unraveled: the bodyguard unburdens himself to a 24-year-old minister who, insensitive to the secrets of confession, runs to tell a private eye. The minister and the private eye then go to the FBI together. Wheres the big confrontation? Wheres the blackmail? Wheres the poetry? That so trite and artless a tale is immediately likened to a work of dramatic fiction should be felt as a stinging rebuke by those who create theatre. Presented as kitchen-sink realism, it wouldnt play for a moment; as Grand Guignol it would be hooted off the stage. The best bet would be to play it as social satire and hope the audience laughs. If Wilde was right and life does indeed imitate art, one of our national priorities should be to find out why life is imitating art of such execrable quality. Art can inform every aspect of national life, including crime, but hooligans today have no contact with art. Nobody raised on Chekhov, Pinter and Shepard could plan or execute anything as depraved as the Kerrigan assaultaesthetically depraved, that is. This is the sort of crime committed by people who wallow in irreality, people who cant distinguish an episode of Mission Impossible from a PBS documentary. There is no better gauge of any nations popular imagination that the quality of its crimes. No wonder the Europeans are laughing at us. The current world champion figure skater, Surya Bonaly of France, snickered, I dont want to comment from such a distance. It certainly seems bizarre. The New York Times also quoted a British skating coach saying, It does seem to be the kind of strange story that one occasionally gets out of America. Look at the nations police blotters and try to find crimes worthy of Marlowes Tamburlaine or de Mussets Lorenzaccio. There arent any. DeQuincy considered murder an art form in itself; for Baudelaire and his admirers, including Genet, a life of crime did not exclude a sense of aesthetics. When Thomas Wainwright, the literary forger and assassin, was reproached for the murder of a woman, he replied, Yes, it was a dreadful thing to do, but she had very thick ankles. Great theatre and great crimes have always gone hand-in-hand. Is it any accident that the Earl of Essex prepared for his act of treason by commissioning a performance at the Globe? That the Marquis de Sade had seen all of Beaumarchaiss comedies? That Lincoln was shot by an actor? These were criminals of vision and daring, criminals who struck at the soul and conscience of the nation, not the kneecaps of its figure skaters. .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146 , .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146 .postImageUrl , .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146 , .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146:hover , .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146:visited , .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146:active { border:0!important; } .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146:active , .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146 .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u66ac66b703091fc4e2fadb151b03c146:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Rene Moreno: the actor that is EssayInstead of Shakespeare and Shaw, Americas criminals have grown up on Charles Bronson and Charlies Angels. Of necessity then, theatre and its allied arts refine and strengthen every aspect of the imaginative life of the country, from best to worst. paigephillips704http://www.blogger.com/profile/10790413584702366934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-705127285108324389.post-80810619111678832082019-11-28T16:11:00.001-08:002019-11-28T16:11:04.666-08:00Strategic Spatial Development Planningpaigephillips704http://www.blogger.com/profile/10790413584702366934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-705127285108324389.post-46262237521475368332019-11-24T23:46:00.001-08:002019-11-24T23:46:05.244-08:00The Best SAT Prep Websites You Should Be UsingThe Best SAT Prep Websites You Should Be Using SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips The SAT has been around in one form or another since 1901. Through all its changes, probably the most helpful one for you is the rise of free online practice questions and guides covering every aspect of the test. Rather than having to carry around 400-page practice books like the students of yesteryear (i.e., the 90s), you can use these online resources to prep from anywhere with the Internet. To help you discern high-quality resources from low-quality ones, this guide will break down the SAT prep websites you can use to review content, learn strategies, and find practice questions. Disclaimer: Free SAT Resources at PrepScholar This article is one of many detailed guides offered (for free!) by PrepScholar. By exploring our other articles, you'll find in-depth information and analyses of all aspects of the SAT and ACT, from suggested study schedules to how to read passages to how to choose your test dates. Plus, we like to keep on top of those high-profile cheating scandals that often result in SAT score cancellations across the globe. I personally think PrepScholar offers the most insightful, high-level guidance around every step of the testing process. Our customized online test prep program tracks your progress and does a lot of the heavy lifting for you. That's why I'll link to our various guides when appropriate in order to give you a sense of the different areas we cover and continue to add to every day. At the same time, there are several other sites with highly useful information for your SAT prep. Rather than listing them in a row, I'll organize them by the testing steps you're looking for, starting with test registration and followed by guides for scheduling, test-taking strategies, and practice questions. Official SAT Website: The College Board If you've heard of the SAT, then you've probably heard of the College Board. This group administers the SAT and sends your score reports to colleges. To register for the SAT, you must create an account on the College Board website and upload a picture of yourself. You can then use this site to register for the SAT, learn about AP tests, and research colleges across the country. But this isn't all the College Board does. For one, it breaks down the SAT's overall format and skills: you can go "inside the test" to see what concepts are tested on the Reading, Math, Writing, and Essay sections. Some descriptions are a bit wordy and confusing, so you'll have to look elsewhere if you want to learn about the test in more accessible language. This website also offers free prep material, including SAT practice questions and ten full-length practice tests. SAT questions from the test makers are the gold standard when it comes to test prep. You can access dozens of sample questions for Reading, Writing, and Math, and you'll get to see all correct answers and answer explanations. For the Essay, the College Board gives test takers two sample essay prompts, and each section of the sample essay is scored from 1 to 4. Because the full-length tests are the same as those in The Official SAT Study Guide, I advise printing them out on your own rather than buying the book. Make sure to time yourself as you take the practice tests, and spend ample time correcting your answers with the answer keys provided. Best SAT Websites for Content and Strategy What concepts are tested on the SAT? What are the different skill sets you need for Writing and Reading? What kinds of tricks can you use to keep yourself from running out of time? One key part of your SAT prep that you won't find much of on the official SAT website is strategy. The College Board doesn't want you to know that questions follow certain standardized templates, or that you'll usually find the same kinds of wrong answers on Reading questions meant to distract you from the correct one. Nor will it give you strategies for reading passages quickly and efficiently or managing your time on tricky math questions. So what resources should you use instead? The following SAT websites are the most useful for learning the content and format of the SAT and getting down critical test-taking strategies. PrepScholar Informational and Strategy SAT Guides Our SAT blog offers in-depth coverage of each section of the test. Read about what's tested on each of the four sections, learn every detail of the SAT structure, and get a comprehensive look at the most recent SAT data, including average scores and percentiles. Unlike the College Board, whose SAT-ACT comparison charts clearly favor the SAT, our breakdown of the two tests has no agenda for you to choose one college admissions test over the other! Some of our best guides to help you understand the content and format of the SAT are as follows: What's Tested on the SAT Math Section? What's Actually Tested on the SAT Reading Section? What's Tested on the SAT Writing Section? SAT Essay Prompts: The Complete List Complete Comparison Charts: SAT vs ACT I also suggest exploring our General Info articles for information on topics such as test dates; Score Choice; scoring, sending, and receiving scores; and the best books for SAT prep. Although learning about the content and format of the SAT is relatively straightforward, finding effective strategies for answering questions and saving time on it are fewer and further between. The following list contains 10 of our most useful and popular SAT strategy guides. How to Study for the New SAT in 2016 How to Get a Perfect 1600 SAT Score, by a 2400 Expert Full Score This is just a small sampling of the SAT strategy guides we offer. In addition to these, we've written tons of guides specific to Math, Reading, and Writing for students in grades 9 through 12, and for middle schoolers who are starting prep early or taking the SAT to qualify for talent competitions. Finally, we strive to keep up with trends and events in the world of the SAT, as you can see in our articles on SAT Essay length and the SAT curve. Erica Meltzer's The Critical Reader Erica Meltzer's blog is extremely useful for prepping for the SAT Reading, Writing, and Essay sections. Over the years, Meltzer's blog has evolved from covering standardized testing to addressing many issues facing students today. That means you will probably have to dig through the site's extensive archives to find SAT prep articles. Many of those posts cover general topics, like learning vocabulary in context and comma usage. Additionally, some of her SAT Reading tips have been merged with ACT Reading tips since the tests are so similar these days. That said, Meltzer offers several useful posts and will most likely continue to add to them. Here are some of her posts that are definitely worth checking out: Using the introduction to get the big picture General vs. specific in Critical Reading answer choices Finding the point The importance of transitions What parts of speech can be subjects? I suggest exploring the blog for more tips for the verbal sections. Although her posts are engaging, Meltzer ultimately leaves it up to you to seek out examples and sample questions when trying out her advice. Erik the Red While Meltzer's blog focuses on verbal skills, Erik the Red is all about SAT Math. This website lets you download PDFs containing critical math facts, formulas, strategies, and vocabulary. The resources here are useful for both the SAT Math section and the SAT Math Level I and Level II Subject Tests. However, it's important to note that this website is even less updated for the SAT than Meltzer's blog is. The math resources here have remained unchanged since the old SAT and thus don't reflect the current SAT format, question types, and skills tested. I decided to keep this website on this list because many of the math concepts explained here- especially the algebraic ones- are essential to your performance on SAT Math. The PDFs Erik the Red has are still useful review for content areas like linear equations, nonlinear equations, functions, quadratic equations, and graphs. You could use them as review, but be sure to focus on the skills that will actually appear on the SAT (and leave out the ones that are less important). For instance, you don't have to focus too much on geometry since it'll only show up in about 3-5% of SAT Math questions. Ask the Dean on College Confidential If you have general questions about the form or content of the SAT that aren't answered in the resources above, try College Confidential. This website offers several student and parent discussion threads about the SAT, which you can peruse or even comment on. The Ask the Dean forum in particular has some helpful advice about how many times to take the SAT. It suggests three- that's more than what the College Board says to do and about the same as what we recommend doing (depending on your circumstances and goals). If you have questions about the logistics of the SAT, read up on the test on College Confidential before signing up for a test date. Best Websites for Free SAT Practice Questions The College Board isn't the only website that offers an assortment of free, high-quality SAT practice questions. Below are our top three picks for the best online resources for practice questions for the Reading, Writing, Math, and Essay sections. Some of them even offer full-length tests! Khan Academy Khan Academy has designed a scaffolded SAT prep program that diagnoses your level and takes you through practice questions, step by step. It was developed in collaboration with the College Board, so all of its practice questions are official and realistic. Its combination of video and written explanations will also appeal to different learning styles. On Khan Academy's interactive site, you can set up an account and take diagnostic tests on each section of the SAT. Then, Khan Academy will suggest what level you should focus on and, much like our own customized approach, present you with targeted question types to help you improve. The site breaks down each section into subtopics and gives you helpful tips on how to structure your prep schedule. Because it keeps track of your progress, you can log in from anywhere to pick up where you left off. In addition to SAT practice questions, Khan Academy offers resources that explain the structure of the SAT. At present, there are six articles and corresponding videos that describe the format and content of each section (including the Essay) and how they're scored. The website also contains a helpful glossary of SAT terms that go over what terms like "percentile" and "raw score" mean. If you're tired of reading about the SAT and prefer to watch explanatory videos, then Khan Academy is your best source for video explanations of what's on the SAT. Though its SAT material is thorough, the limited number of practice questions and lack of test strategy mean that Khan Academy, while incredibly useful, shouldn't be your only source of practice problems. PrepScholar Collection of Old and New Official SAT Practice Tests We've compiled PDFs for all ten official SAT practice tests, which you can download, print, and take on your own. In addition, we've collected four old SAT practice tests (using the 2400 system) and four very old SAT practice tests (using the old 1600 system). While these tests use old versions of the SAT, they can still be useful for your prep as long as you focus on relevant question types and skip the ones no longer tested (such as Sentence Completion). You'll have to score these tests on your own as well as take the time to understand your mistakes and analyze your answer choices. You can also try out a 5-day free trial of PrepScholar's online test prep program. For these 5 days, you'll have access to the entire program and can try out whether this approach to test prep works for you. PrepScholar helps break down your SAT prep into manageable goals, tracks your progress, and customizes your studying so you're focusing on the practice problems where you need the most improvement. If you enjoy this approach to test prep, then you can continue on with the entire program. If not, then you can call it quits after your 5-day trial. CrackSAT.net Like PrepScholar, CrackSAT.net offers free, official, old SAT practice tests (with answer keys) that you can download for free as PDFs. While the site does have some resources for the New SAT, there aren't very many. Having said that, even old SAT practice tests are great resources for practicing test-taking strategies to maximize your time...and your score. Like some of the other resources we've mentioned, you'll have to score these practice tests yourself. Be sure to set aside time to understand and analyze any mistakes you made. Also, this website is a bit tough to navigate, but once you wind your way through it, you'll have access to plenty of SAT practice questions. Altogether, this collection of websites and blogs can give you a ton of information about the SAT, from its content and form to strategies and official practice questions. Read on to learn the steps you should take to best use these online SAT resources in your prep. How to Use SAT Websites Effectively In order to get the most out of the websites listed above, you'll need to know how to approach and use SAT websites effectively. For both the College Board and Khan Academy, you'll want to make an account and keep track of your usernames and passwords. To post on College Confidential, you'll also need to register on the site to connect with community of students and parents going through the same college application process as you. For our own SAT strategy guides and Erica Meltzer's blog, you can just read through the different articles to answer any questions you might have or to learn new tips. You can then try out the various strategies you've learned on official SAT practice tests. Although the College Board is the official site for all things SAT, I recommend against taking all of its advice as definitive. The College Board's resources don't focus on test-taking strategies, which are the key to making sure you're scoring as high as possible. In the end, your best shot is to search for high-quality strategies and insights into the SAT on these other websites, and then try them out on official practice questions or during our free, five-day SAT prep program trial. By combining strategy and content readiness with official SAT practice questions, you'll be able to improve your score a great deal across all dates you take the SAT! What's Next? One cannot ignore such an aspect of leadership because no matter how good a president's policies are, at the end of the day, he/she needs to communicate them to the public and convince them why those policies should be implemented. History has shown how leaders like Winston Churchill and Adolph Hitler were able to move crowds to action. Presidents with good oratory skills may motivate their citizens to work harder and contribute towards the development of their economy. (Somerset, 2008) Some of Obama's rivals have claimed that this is something that should not be considered since they feel that greater precedence should be given to policies. However, this argument holds no water because Obama has both aspects; oratory skills and concrete ideas. One of the most outspoken candidates and rivals to Obama; Clinton keep on claiming that Senator Obama has no experience in politics generally and in the United States parliament specifically. However this is very invalid statement because of the following reasons; First of all, Senator Obama has served for seven years as Illinois Senator. When one compares this to what President George W. Bush had before his election, this exceeds Bush's years by five. Even his main democratic rival has nothing on him. If voted into office, he will have three years more experience than her. It should also be note that the issue of experience has only been considered as a point by Hillary Clinton. No other presidential candidate has highlighted the issue of lack of experience aside from her. Racial issues Some stereotypes have argued that American citizens will never accept an African American for president. But this is a far cry from where the American State has emerged. Gone are the days when African Americans were considered as subordinate to the 'white' American. Those issues were addressed adequately in the 1964 Civil rights movements that saw the elimination of all discriminative issues. While one must not ignore the fact that race is still an issue in the US, it is highly unlikely that this will the main issue driving the election. Polls have shown that the racial issue carries a very small percentage among priority lists for voters. (Hutcherson, 2008) It should also be noted that there are also other issues in other presidential candidates that would cause potential sources of bias. For example, Hillary Clinton is also not your 'typical candidate' simply because she is a woman. The New Mexico Governor was happens to be a Latin American and still stood for the presidential race. Therefore proponents of this argument would eliminate almost all presidential candidates since there is something about them that renders them unconventional. The United States electorate is more interested in the best and most qualified person for the job and not how they look like. Such biases are more of side shows than the real deal. Bi partisanship Senator Barrack Obama is one leader who has the ability to reconcile two major differing parties or issues. The nature of the American State is that most individuals are quite opinionated yet democratic at the same time. There is no room for imposition of rules or policies without consultation and paigephillips704http://www.blogger.com/profile/10790413584702366934noreply@blogger.com0
